Bricks Fight Back

Retail stores are ramping up their use of technology to draw in more customers with eye-catching ads and an array of what are called “unique shopping experiences." Brick-and-mortar outlets are loading their arsenals with technology borrowed from video gaming, flight simulation, sound-and-light spectaculars, and just about every reality—virtual or otherwise—in between.

Retailers have little choice. With the surge in online shopping in recent years, fewer people are actually setting foot inside actual stores to buy goods. Kimmells find a home at Forge

An ordinary box of corn starch should be the mascot for Ron and Sheila Kimmell as they settle in to their neighborhood as the owners of Forge Food Mart and Liquor.

It was Christmas last year, Ron begins, urging his wife of 39 years to tell the story. Sheila reluctantly filled in the blanks, obviously believing there was nothing extraordinary about her actions to save one familys holiday dinner last December.

Sheila was working the store Christmas Day to let their employees be home with their own families. One man walked in, sent there on a mission to find corn starch to thicken the turkey gravy for dinner. A search of the shelves proved Forge did not carry the item.

Naturally, Sheila picked up the phone and called all the other local convenience stores that were open for the holiday, but none of them stocked corn starch, either.

At a price his mother doesn't mind - $14.98 - he got his fourth pair of Starburys last week, a sneaker created by New York Knicks point guard Stephon Marbury. Joanne Cox brought her two teenage sons to Steve & Barry's University Sportswear after church last Sunday for the launch of Marbury's spring line.
