Former Collierville Building Official Files Suit Seeking Old Job

ON AGAIN: First Baptist Church in Collierville at 830 New Byhalia Road is in the midst of a major expansion project. The town's former top building official, Lynn Hicks, was fired shortly after issuing a "stop work order" at the site several weeks ago. -- PHOTO BY ANDY MEEK

Lynn Hicks, Collierville's top building official before he was sacked last month over a myriad of performance-related issues, has filed a lawsuit in Shelby County Chancery Court.

The suit filed by the former head of Collierville's building codes department is an application for writ of certiorari, which, if granted, would reverse the decision that led to Hicks' being fired. To pursue his legal action against the town, he's hired Clyde Keenan, a former Memphis police officer, as his attorney.

Dell Inc. decides against opening 2nd showroom

ROUND ROCK, Texas - Dell Inc. has abandoned plans to open a second retail showroom and said it will re-evaluate ways to reach new customers after losing the lead in personal computers to Hewlett-Packard Co. last year.

A 3,000-square-foot store in West Nyack, N.Y., slated to open earlier this year, is no longer being considered, said Dwayne Cox, a spokesman for Dell.

Dell opened its first showroom in Dallas in July to give people a place to see PCs, televisions and other products before ordering them online or by telephone. Cox said that customer acceptance of the Dallas showroom has been good.

It Makes No Difference Who You Are: Disney Welcomes You Home

If you have ever been to Walt Disney World in Florida and stayed at a Disney resort, you are familiar with the words "Welcome Home." This phrase is repeated by everyone from the bus driver, the concierge, the bellhop, the maid and the cashier at the store to the workers at the theme parks.

At first it was a little amusing when I heard this, but after the fifth time or so it became somewhat eerie. I wondered whether or not these Disney people had been drinking some kind of Mickey Kool-Aid and were part of a weird cult. This cynicism slowly faded as I saw the wonder in my five-year-old daughter's eyes and understood that they were all part of making the magic happen for her (and for her Mommy and me, too).

Disney is all about magic from the moment of arrival. There is a sense of stepping through a looking glass, a sense of wonder that springs from the child we all still have hiding somewhere inside us.

Bricks Fight Back

Retail stores are ramping up their use of technology to draw in more customers with eye-catching ads and an array of what are called “unique shopping experiences." Brick-and-mortar outlets are loading their arsenals with technology borrowed from video gaming, flight simulation, sound-and-light spectaculars, and just about every reality—virtual or otherwise—in between.

Retailers have little choice. With the surge in online shopping in recent years, fewer people are actually setting foot inside actual stores to buy goods. To stay competitive, real-world retailers have to provide unique and blended experiences to differentiate themselves from their competition, says Forrester Research senior analyst Tamara Mendelsohn. “You will see more innovative technologies at more brick-and-mortar retail locations," she says.

With all the sexy images in the media many parents feel the battle over appropriate clothing for girls is tougher than ever.In this Parent 2 Parent report: how some businesses are helping girls feel good about dressing modestly.Britney Spears and Paris Hilton, todays young celebrities arent exactly role models when it comes to modest clothing. But more and more clothing manufacturers are realizing there is a market for more conservative styles. The quest to find an undershirt or cami that had a lower waistline and higher neckline was what led Chelsea Rippy to start the Shade Clothing Company: a line of modest, fashionable t-shirts and dresses.Rippy says she often noticed girls tugging at shirts that were too small or too tight, young women are going to do whatever it takes to fit in and whether theyre going to wear something that doesnt look good on them, I think theyre willing to do it to fit in.And Rippy may be right.
