Loan shopping tricky, but worth it

Jane J. Kim — For students and their parents, shopping for loans beyond their school's preferred lender lists might be harder than they expect.

Most students who take out loans use one of the companies on their school's preferred list because it's the path of least resistance.

Buzzillions is a better shopping experience

When we last checked in with PowerReviews, the company that powers user review feedback for online retailers, the team had just launched a user-facing site to aggregate reviews from its clients. I liked it, although I had some criticisms. This week, PowerReviews launched a new site, Buzzillions, which addresses some of the early site's issues and adds a few more features. (It's too bad the name sucks, though.)

The new site does a much better job of clumping products together. You're less likely to find 15 different listings for the same camera now (one for each store that carries it). Now they're listed together, and you can compare feedback from people who bought the product at different places.

Buzzillions also offers a few ways to find a product beyond searching by prices and brands.

APM Music and Indie911 Partner to Provide New Source of ...

LOS ANGELES --(Business Wire)-- At the ASCAP "I Create Music" Expo last week, APM Music and Indie911 announced a new partnership to provide television networks, film studios, trailer houses, video game companies and other producers with direct access to independent music for licensing opportunities. Now, artists on Indie911 - the online social network, artist service provider, and music store - can submit music for consideration to APM, the EMI/BMG co-venture production music library that supplies material to thousands of TV shows, films, commercials and internet-based media every year. Revenue earned by the licensing of music through the APM Music/Indie911 partnership will be divided between the two entities. Indie911 will make payment directly to the artists.

Functional or Fictional: Super-Nutritious Foods

RISMEDIA, April 12, 2007-(MSN.com/Forbes.com)-You're in the grocery store shopping for a carton of orange juice for tomorrow's breakfast and you're faced with a decision-plain old juice or, for no extra cost, one fortified with bone-building calcium.

You're not alone. Promising better bang for the buck, products like these, called functional foods, are increasingly filling grocery store aisles-and our fridges.

But do we really need them?

"There's a finite volume in the stomach and everybody is vying for that volume," says Fergus Clydesdale, distinguished professor and department head at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. "One way to try to get a part of the share of that volume is to offer something that has some health benefit."

The term "functional food" has no legal definition.

Conklin: Sketchy art school opens in Madison

The scene at the High Noon Saloon at 2 p.m. today will be bawdy and bodacious when Dr. Sketchy comes to town.

What is Dr. Sketchy's Anti Art School? Described as "decadent doodling" and "three solid hours of drinking, drawing and debauchery," it's a life-drawing salon with cabaret models. And now there's a Madison chapter.

The event was started by artist Molly Crabapple two years ago with a little Brooklyn group and has turned into an international movement that combines burlesque and art. And it's a perfect fit here, given that Madison is home to the well-known performers Cherry Pop Burlesque. No surprise - they're behind it, so to speak.
